Project Description
Etihad Airways Flight Training Facility, UAE (PDF)
etc Design Ltd have been appointed to provide architectural design services as part of the professional team for an extension to Etihad Airways Training Centre in Abu Dhabi, UAE, which has been shortlisted in the “International Project of the Year” category for the British Construction Industry Awards (BCIA) 2014.
The extension provides space initially for 6 full flight electric motion simulators. Ancillary rooms, including training rooms and office accommodation are located on the first and second floors.
To the main west elevation is a 10m high fully glazed raking façade complete with brise soleil and solar control glass capped with a winged shaped cantilevered roof having an 8m overhang, all to reduce solar gain and to showcase the simulators.
The building extension was also designed complete with removable panels for simulator replacement and foundations designed to resist specified earthquake forces for the region.
The Etihad Training Facility became fully operational in 2014 and was completed within the original construction budget, on programme and with zero defects.
