Project Description

Affordable Housing, Bucknell (PDF)

The site for this affordable housing scheme was a sloping site of a former plant nursery at the edge of the village of Bucknell. Developed from old designs which no longer met the evolved brief, this scheme was designed to Secured by Design, Lifetime Homes and obtained Code for Sustainable Homes level 3. The challenge here was to maintain accessible gradients across the property, whilst minimising the need for retaining walls to mitigate the slope.

In keeping with the area, the designs for the 10 properties use features found elsewhere in the village, including bay windows, catslide dormers and projecting gables. The materials palette again reflects local character in its use of red-brown bricks, timber cladding and cream render. All this came together in a rural scheme with a modern twist, linking it to the village whilst having its own identity.
