Passivhaus Scout Association Hub –

Four Marks Scout Group, Hampshire

Client:

Four Marks Scout Group

Floor Area (sqm)

Value (£m)

The Four Marks Scout Group had outgrown their existing scout hut and wanted to provide a modern, flexible and low maintenance building that could be used by local residents and Scout Association Groups, some of which have waiting lists due to a shortage of accommodation.

This project was situated on a rural site on the edge of an existing recreation ground and playing fields, with neighbouring farm land being converted to housing. The form of the building is derived from traditional, timber clad scout huts and the local context of agricultural buildings. Materials proposed included a mix of dark vertical and natural horizontal timber boarding, with standing seam barrel vaulted metal roof and sedum flat roof areas.

The client was keen to adopt a low energy sustainable approach using Passivhaus principles and collaborative BIM. This resulted in a linear footprint for the main areas of the building which features an exposed glulam frame to central multi-purpose hall, meeting rooms, small office and ancillary accommodation and storage areas. To the rear outside of the thermal envelope is a large two storey storage area for the drying of tents or other equipment and a garage for a minibus and trailer.

The double height exposed structure to the main entrance provides covered access on approach and further extended roofs are provided to outdoor activity spaces which overlook the playing fields. Introducing natural daylight into the building with skylights, as well as providing views out from the multi purpose hall, entrance lobby and meeting rooms, help to connect the building with its rural surroundings.

etc Design Ltd were appointed to provide architectural services including feasibility and concept designs, assist with the appointment of the design team and to develop 3D visualisations and layouts to secure full planning approval.
