This private client initially approached us whilst considering the purchase of a separate property, requiring advice on the feasibility of altering the building to their unique requirements. However following our early stage advice the decision was taken to purchase a different property.

For the purchased property the client’s brief was for a fusion of art deco and contemporary design styles creating a high quality, state of the art five-bedroom home. The design is therefore a fusion between art deco and contemporary styles, creating a very high-quality product with a variety of intriguing design features. 

By keeping a monochrome exterior, which balances the verticality of the projecting stairwell with the horizontal linear forms typical of art deco buildings, the flash of colour in the central stained glass window is more clearly emphasised.  To the rear, the monochrome exterior continues, but the style subtly alters to provide a more contemporary form, with light touch detailing to link it back to the art deco frontage.

In order to accommodate the required spaces, the whole rear of the building was extended by several metres, and large expanses of glazing were introduced to bring daylight deep into the building plan.  Internally the ground floor accommodates a large entertaining space containing kitchen, dining, lounge and games room, with adjacent cinema room, as its primary space, which capture views out into the garden beyond.

etc Design Ltd were appointed to provide a full architectural service, fulfilling the roles of Architect, Lead Designer, Principal Designer and Contract Administrator, as well as supplying external design team members for the project.  Our role involved discussions and applications to planning and an Approved Inspector, as well as negotiation with a selected local contractor rather than the more usual tender route.
